Books from Birth!

Dr. Seuss is one of the most famous children's book authors. He understood the importance of reading in every child's life. Did you know that according to Michigan State in 2002, a child learns more between birth and age 2 than any other stage in life? Reading to your child and modeling for them as early as birth has been proven to benefit your child's development. This is why Dolly Parton's Imagination Library in partnership with the Governor's Books from Birth has made books available at no cost to every child in Tennessee.

Each local program enrolls children and promotes Books from Birth within the community. Funds are raised for half of the cost of books and mailing, while the other half is provided through an annual state grant. We are very lucky to have the Rutherford County Imagination Library to support the efforts in our community. Just this past May, our local program helped to replace a girl's books lost in a house fire.

Since the program began in Rutherford county, they have had more than 8,700 Rutherford County children enroll in the program and over 400,000 book donated. The program also holds fundraisers to support our local schools. Also this past May,  Smyrna West received $5,000, John Coleman received $2,500 and LaVergne Primary won 1,000 in prize money from the fundraiser.
