Importance of Reading to Young Children

We are having the Book Fair May 14th-18th with Usborne Books. Reading to young children is so important. Reading aloud promotes language development and early literacy skills.

Here are some early literacy skills and how to include them in your story time.

  • Make reading fun: Use funny voices and gestures.
  • Choose stories that are not too long and appropriate for your child's age.
  • Phonological awareness: Make rhymes and songs. Make the sound of the animal, automobiles, and any other things. Clap out words to emphasize syllables.
  • Print Awareness: Run your finger under the text to show what you are reading. Show how to handle the book and demonstrate how to read.
  • Vocabulary: Don't be afraid to introduce new words and build their vocabulary
  • Narrative Skills: Make reading interactive by asking questions and discussing. Have them retell the story to you.

Make a game of it to build these early literacy skills. Here are some fun game ideas that you can play anywhere.

I hope to see you at our book fair. They will have books for all ages and interest.
