Back to School and Routines

September is the time to get back to school and back to a routine. Routines give a sense of order and stability and invite a feeling of safety and security. It is worth the effort to establish routines in your household.
Start by focusing on one routine at a time. Pick the hardest routine for your family and work on that one first. Once it becomes established regimen then move on to the next.
To establish a routine be firm and kind about the procedure but also explain the importance. Visual aids, such as charts and list can help. Click here for a great free routine printable.

Learning in the Kitchen

The kitchen is the tastiest place for your child to learn. They learn math, science, art, safety, health, nutrition, culture, and even how to follow directions. They enjoy this process as well as enjoying the finished product. They may not even realize that they are learning.
Here are some great age appropriate ideas to get them started in the kitchen.

Last week at The Academy of Gateway, our Health and Wellness Coordinator Ms. Colleen went in to the classrooms to make ice cream. The children enjoyed this tasty treat while learning about measurements as well as a science lesson.

Here is Ms. Colleen Ice Cream In A Bag Recipe:

1 Cup Half and Half
2 Tbsp Sugar
1/2 Tsp Vanilla Extract
3 Cups Ice
1/3 Cup Kosher Salt

Directions:
In a small Ziploc bag, combine half and half, sugar, and vanilla.
Push out excess air and seal.

In a gallon size Ziploc bag, combine ice and salt.

Place small bag in big bag and shake vigorously, 7 to 10 min, until ice cream has hardened.

Remove bag and enjoy with your favorite ice cream toppings.

Shake it up

 And Enjoy!

Music and Your Preschooler

Children love music. They will naturally dance to any beat. Music is a integral part of brain development and preschoolers are at the ideal age to expand their musical horizons. Listening to music forges pathways between brain cells. Kids who actively participate in music make the strongest neurological connections.

We had a great musical guest, Jake the Music Man. The kids got to participate in different activities and learn some basics of music.

They carried their inspirations back into the classroom. Hopefully, it will ignite a spark in some for a love of music that they will carry throughout their life.

S'mores and camping just go together. We are getting close to that perfect time of year to go camping. You don't have to rough it the first time you camp with your kiddos.Try it in the backyard or even in the living room.
