Celebrating Black History

Here at The Academy of Gateway, we celebrated Black History Month and African American Inventors Week. We talked about Jackie Robertson, Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglass, and many more. We also talked about how George Washington Carver invented over 300 uses for peanuts and how Garrett Morgan invented the traffic light in 1923.

Developing Self- Awareness

Babies will giggle and laugh when they look at themselves in the mirror but since they do not have a “sense of self” yet, they do not recognize this image as themselves. In fact, they don’t even see themselves as separate from you. This will not happen until 16 to 18 months. We let each baby play in front of the mirror and talked about what they were seeing. We discussed eyes, nose, ears, and even some hair.

National Children's Dental Health Month

National Childrens Dental Health month is a national health observance that brings together thousands of dedicated professionals, health care providers, and educators to promote the benefits of good oral health to children, their caregivers, teachers, and many others.
This month at The Academy we are talking about the importance of dental hygiene. Our teachers talked about what can happen if you don't keep up with keeping your teeth healthy and clean. We also made a cool Apple Smile Snack with Apples, sunbutter, and marshmallows.

Chinese New Year!

On Monday, February 1st our school celebrated Chinese New Year. Chinese New Year is also known as the Lunar New Year. This Holiday celebrates the beginning of a New Year on the traditional lunisolar and solar Chinese calendar. Our kiddos were able to see a traditional Chinese fan and make some cool Chinese lanterns.
