Nature ignites imagination and promotes healthy development! Developing
literacy skills can happen in the classroom or outside. Books about animals and
insects encourage curiosity to engage in conversations and make observations
in nature. Encourage children to write or draw their observations. With
younger ones, you can write down descriptions of their art. Take a nature walk
around the building or around the block. Remember the importance of
supervision if your adventure takes you away from the school. Take pictures that can be used for discussion during circle time. Introduce unfamiliar words to their vocabulary and use open ended questions to help with cognitive skills. Use the pictures to create art projects or create stories that
encourage writing skills. A book like Little Cloud by Eric Carle inspires children to lie on their backs and look at
the clouds! This can be done with both our youngest learners and our older ones.
